Armed Conflict at the Border: Roma Attacked Border Guards in Transcarpathia.


In the evening of May 29, an attack occurred on a border patrol conducting verification measures in the Roma settlement of the city of Velikyi Bereznyi in the Transcarpathia region. The incident took place during a joint operation of border guards, the National Police, and the National Guard aimed at identifying individuals who may be involved in smuggling men of draft age across the Ukrainian-Slovak border.
During the questioning of a group of citizens, they actively resisted law enforcement officers. The initiators of the conflict incited other citizens to illegal actions, involving women and minors in the scuffle. In response, stones and bricks were thrown at the border guards and their official vehicle.

During the conflict, two border guards sustained moderate bodily injuries and were hospitalized for medical assistance. Additionally, two official vehicles of the State Border Guard Service were damaged.
Details of the Incident and Consequences
The individuals who carried out the attack have been detained. Their actions may be classified as criminal offenses under Article 345 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine "Threat or Violence Against a Law Enforcement Officer" and Article 194 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine "Intentional Destruction or Damage to Property." Relevant notifications have already been sent to the National Police for further investigation.
After the attack, a group of local residents attempted to block the border unit, but thanks to explanatory work, the illegal actions were stopped.
The incident in Transcarpathia, where the attack on border guards took place, requires further investigation and legal qualification. The attackers will be held accountable for their actions, which may be considered criminal offenses violating the law and raising many questions about border security and respect for the law.
