Often among drivers, there is a common belief that driving licenses can only be lost due to serious traffic violations such as driving a vehicle under the influence of alcohol or creating an emergency situation on the road. However, in reality, in Ukraine, drivers can face serious consequences even for such a minor violation as not having a fire extinguisher in the car. Recently, law enforcement agencies have paid more attention to the presence of this mandatory safety element to prevent potential dangers. If a driver is caught during a check without a fire extinguisher, they face a fine of 680 hryvnias.
Drivers often agree to pay the fine but continue to drive without a fire extinguisher, unaware of the possible consequences. However, if the violation is repeated, the fine is doubled, and the driver may lose their license for up to six months.
Fire extinguishers are mandatory only for drivers transporting passengers or operating commercial vehicles. Owners of personal vehicles who do not carry passengers or do not engage in commercial transport are only subjected to a warning.
Drivers are also warned that police sometimes mistakenly or intentionally issue fines to private vehicle drivers. In this case, the fine can be challenged in court by proving its illegality.
Therefore, to avoid unfair fines, it is recommended to always have a functioning certified fire extinguisher in the car. This will help avoid misunderstandings with the police and can be useful in an emergency situation.
