The government efficiency department, headed by Elon Musk, arrived on Friday at the headquarters of the Peace Corps in Washington, D.C., indicating that this may be the last object of Trump's administration's efforts to reduce the number of federal employees.
'Employees of the government efficiency department are currently working at the headquarters of the Peace Corps, and the agency will facilitate their requests,' the agency said in a Reuters statement.
The Peace Corps, founded in 1961 by then-President John F. Kennedy, sends volunteers around the world to assist countries in projects aimed at education, health care, and the economy. Since then, over 240,000 Americans have volunteered with the Peace Corps. The agency is widely regarded as one of the most distinguished tools used by the U.S. government to promote global influence.

The Peace Corps, which has an annual budget of over $400 million, has always been popular among both Democrats and Republicans. There is a bipartisan Peace Corps in Congress.
In 1983, then-President Ronald Reagan said: 'By the example of these Peace Corps volunteers, people around the world can understand that the heart of America is strong and good.'
Peace Corps staff were told by agency leadership to expect DOGE representatives on Friday afternoon and to work the entire weekend, Reuters reports.
President Donald Trump has already taken several steps to eliminate key pillars of America's soft power since taking office in January, including efforts to eliminate the U.S. Agency for International Development, the U.S. Institute of Peace, and government-funded broadcasters like Voice of America.
