Finland reports large-scale influence operations by Russia
Finnish Interior Minister Lulu Ranne reported that Russia is conducting large-scale influence operations against Finland and other European countries. According to Ranne, NATO and Western intelligence services are warning of an increasing number of hostile acts by Russia in this region.
Ranne stated that Finland faces system disruptions, acts of sabotage, various damages, and instrumentalized migration. She also noted that investigations of many cases are ongoing and there are clear signs pointing to Russia as the main conductor of these influence operations.
One of the apparent links was the disruption of GPS communication that Finland observed in its maritime and air traffic.
The Finnish Security and Intelligence Service noted that not all suspicious cases are connected to foreign states; some may be related to increased public attention to such incidents.
The Finnish energy company Fortum reported cyberattacks they face daily in Finland and Sweden. Additionally, the satellite communication of Fortum's power plants was disrupted. Such attacks have also prompted the Finnish National Bureau of Investigation to start investigating cyberattacks targeting the financial sector.
Finnish authorities are also examining cases of drone sightings near critical facilities and attempting to determine if they are connected to state-related activities.
According to Finnish intelligence, Russia is rethinking its operations after the expulsion of over 700 Russian diplomats from European countries in response to the war in Ukraine. Finnish intelligence services emphasized that Russia is becoming increasingly aggressive and dangerous, but it is not the omnipotent actor it likes to portray itself as.
