Russian shadow fleet threatens global ecology
European Union special envoy for sanctions David O'Sullivan stated that the Russian shadow fleet used to export oil poses a threat to global ecology. He mentioned this during a speech in Brussels. According to him, this problem is understood even by countries that have not joined the sanctions against Russia.
One of the priorities is addressing the shadow fleet issue. We have equipped ourselves with the ability to impose sanctions on vessels and are working very closely with the United States, the United Kingdom, and other G7 colleagues to try and identify and immobilize as much of this shadow fleet as possible. We are also considering cooperation with third countries not because they want to enforce our sanctions, but because they are very aware of the environmental risk from these old, end-of-life tankers that are insured under very dubious conditions and carry large volumes of oil around the world, passing near the coasts of many southern countries
The EU special envoy believes that Russia's shadow fleet could cause a major environmental disaster.
There is a risk of a major environmental disaster for which there would be no money for remediation. So, this is also a factor being discussed with the International Maritime Organization
