Lithuania calls on NATO to change the airspace patrol algorithm

Lithuanian Defense Minister Laurynas Kasčiūnas called for changing the NATO airspace patrol mission algorithm in the Baltic countries after a Russian military drone recently crashed in Latvia.

The head of the Ministry of Defense noted that the Alliance's mission "should not only patrol, but also, if necessary, if Time permits, shorten the decision-making chain at the NATO level so that they can immediately take off and destroy the drones".

Kasčiūnas believes that in the event of a threat of airspace violation by a drone, information about it should be quickly transmitted to the Alliance headquarters.

The NATO headquarters assesses the situation, whether there is enough evidence that it is indeed an enemy drone and not some other lost aircraft, and then a quick decision is made to deploy air police aircraft. This is a certain algorithm, and it needs to be accelerated," noted the Lithuanian minister.

Answering a question about Vilnius's reaction in the event of a violation of the country's airspace by an aggressor's drone, Kasčiūnas said that it should be a collective NATO decision.
